Helen Ruth DeWitt went to her eternal home in Heaven at 10:55 a.m. on October 9, 2019 in Grimes. She was born July 20, 1928 in El Campo, Texas, the daughter of Rev. G.C. Senff and Ellen (Pfennig) Senff. She graduated from Pflugerville High School, Pflugerville, Texas in 1945. She entered the Army Cadet Nurse Corps. Because of health issues, she was not able to continue. She worked for the Texas State Health Department before coming to Iowa in 1946.
She was a devoted and caring nurse for 29½ years at Humboldt and Des Moines, Iowa hospitals. She retired in 1999; then she worked part-time at the Granger, Iowa children’s center. Due to health issues, she fully retired in 2006.
Helen excelled in cooking and enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, crafts and gardening. She was also a Girl Scout Leader, and she worked for the United Community School lunch program when it was at Jordan, Iowa. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Woodward, Iowa. Helen cherished the time she had to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandsons.
Helen was a youth leader and a Sunday School Teacher while a member of Boone E-Free church. She also served as a bible school teacher. She later became a member of the Madrid Evangelical Free Church. Her church was a vital part of her life. Her faith in God sustained her daily.
She is survived by her five children: Larry (Louise) DeWitt, Joyce DeWitt, Mary (Jerry) Sebben, Patricia (Pat) DeWitt, and Susan (Jerry) Osburn; five grandchildren: Heidi (Chris) Willis, Jon (Crystal) Sebben, Leah Spencer, Jay Sebben, and Abby (Dave) McClure; six great-grandchildren: Reanna, Elizabeth, Isabella, Geno, Bennett and Emma Ruth; and great-great grandsons, Jace and Liam and a host of other family and friends.
