It should not come as a surprise that Polk County Sheriff’s officer Shane Grego received a lifesaving award. Grego, who is featured on the Grimes Law Enforcement Facebook page this month, has a history of serving the public during crises even before joining the department: He was a technician in the emergency room at Methodist Hospital.
Now a sergeant in his 20th year with the department, Grego served as a field training officer before becoming a shift supervisor; both positions involve teaching and mentoring younger officers.
“I’ve been lucky to have worked for some great supervisors in the past that taught me a lot and now I can try and pass that on,” he said.
An accomplished cook who studied culinary arts at Des Moines Area Community College, Grego says he spend his nonwork hours mostly with his family. Aside from cooking, he enjoys outdoor activities such as golfing and boating.
